Do I Need a Heart Test?

Heart disease does not always announce itself. Many Australians live with undiagnosed heart conditions that could be detected, and treated, with a simple heart test. You should consider heart testing if any of the following apply to you.

Age and Background

You are over 45 years old, or over 30 if you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Heart disease risk increases significantly with age, and early screening saves lives.

Family History

A parent, sibling, or close relative has had a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or sudden cardiac death. Genetic factors play a major role in heart disease risk.

Existing Health Conditions

You have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, or chronic kidney disease. These conditions significantly increase your risk of heart failure.

Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Shortness of breath, chest tightness, unexplained fatigue, dizziness, swollen ankles, or a racing heartbeat. These may be signs of an underlying heart condition.

Lifestyle Factors

You smoke or have smoked, drink alcohol regularly, lead a sedentary lifestyle, or experience high levels of stress. These factors compound your cardiovascular risk over time.

Regional or Remote Location

You live outside a major city and have limited access to specialist cardiac services. The Heart Screen brings hospital-grade heart testing to regional and remote communities across Australia.

How to Get Your Heart Tested

Getting a heart test with The Heart Screen is straightforward. There are no complicated forms, no hospital appointments, and no out-of-pocket costs.

1

Talk to Your GP

Visit your GP and ask for a referral for a heart test (echocardiogram). If you are over 45 or have risk factors, your GP can refer you on the spot.

2

We Come to You

Our specialist cardiac sonographer travels to your GP clinic, aged care facility, or community location with hospital-grade equipment. No hospital visit needed.

3

Simple, Painless Test

The heart test takes 30-45 minutes. You lie comfortably while the sonographer uses ultrasound to capture detailed images of your heart. No needles. No radiation.

4

Expert Results

Your results are reviewed by a consultant cardiologist and sent to your GP within 24-48 hours. If anything needs attention, your GP will discuss next steps with you.

What Can a Heart Test Detect?

An echocardiogram is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in cardiology. It provides a real-time, moving image of your heart, revealing conditions that blood tests and stethoscopes simply cannot detect.

Heart Failure

Detects whether your heart is pumping effectively. Heart failure affects over 500,000 Australians, and early detection is critical to preventing hospitalisation and improving quality of life.

  • Measures ejection fraction (pumping strength)
  • Identifies enlarged heart chambers
  • Detects fluid around the heart

Valve Disease

Identifies problems with your heart's four valves, including narrowing (stenosis) and leaking (regurgitation). Valve disease is common in older Australians and often goes undetected.

  • Assesses all four heart valves
  • Measures blood flow direction and speed
  • Grades severity of valve problems

Cardiomyopathy

Detects thickening, enlargement, or stiffening of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy can be inherited and is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in younger Australians.

  • Measures heart wall thickness
  • Identifies abnormal heart muscle patterns
  • Screens for inherited conditions

Structural Abnormalities

Reveals congenital heart defects, holes in the heart, and other structural issues that may have gone undetected since birth. Many adults live with undiagnosed structural heart conditions.

  • Detects atrial and ventricular septal defects
  • Identifies pericardial disease
  • Assesses aortic root and major vessels

Who Is The Heart Screen?

The Heart Screen is a Preventia initiative, Australia's first fully mobile, bulk-billed cardiac screening service. We exist because we believe you should not have to be wealthy to know your heart is healthy.

Our specialist cardiac sonographers use the same hospital-grade echocardiography equipment found in major cardiac departments. Every scan is reviewed by a consultant cardiologist. We partner with GP clinics, aged care facilities, and communities across Australia to deliver heart testing where it is needed most, outside the hospital walls.

We are proudly partnered with Bond University, ASUM, Ageing Australia, and leading Primary Health Networks. Our mission is simple: detect heart disease before it becomes a crisis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the heart test painful?

Not at all. An echocardiogram is completely painless. A small ultrasound probe is placed on your chest with a gel, similar to an ultrasound during pregnancy. There are no needles, no radiation, and no discomfort. Most patients find it relaxing.

Do I need to prepare for my heart test?

No special preparation is required. You can eat, drink, and take your usual medications before the test. We recommend wearing a loose-fitting top for easy access to the chest area.

How long does the heart test take?

A standard echocardiogram takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. You will be lying comfortably on an examination bed throughout the test.

Who reviews my results?

Every heart test is reviewed by a qualified consultant cardiologist. The cardiologist prepares a detailed report which is sent directly to your referring GP within 24 to 48 hours.

Can I refer myself for a heart test?

To receive a bulk-billed heart test, you need a referral from your GP. Simply visit your doctor and ask for a referral for an echocardiogram with The Heart Screen. Your GP can also send the referral directly to us at admin@theheartscreen.com.au.

Where does The Heart Screen operate?

We operate across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania, with national expansion underway. Our mobile service reaches metropolitan, regional, and remote communities. Visit our Locations page to find heart testing near you.

What if my results show a problem?

If the cardiologist identifies a concern, your GP will receive a detailed report with recommendations. Your GP will then discuss the findings with you and arrange any further investigation or treatment. Early detection means earlier intervention, which leads to better outcomes.
